The Melbourne JD
In 2008, Melbourne Law School began the transition to a fully graduate law school and from 2008, only graduate students can be admitted to the Law School. Within a short period of time, the Melbourne JD (Juris Doctor) will become the sole degree offered by the Law School that will lead to admission to legal practice. This step is being taken as part of a new approach to tertiary education adopted by the University referred to as the Melbourne Model.
This important development aligns legal education at Melbourne with the dominant trend in legal education around the world. It anchors specialist professional legal education in a broad undergraduate experience – thus opening the doors to ever more creative and challenging forms of learning.
We firmly believe that the Melbourne JD, as designed and taught by Melbourne Law School, represents the right response to the challenge of providing the highest quality legal education in the demanding and competitive international environment of the 21st century. The name Juris Doctor is widely used to signify a graduate degree in law and is internationally recognised. We are proud to offer graduate legal education of the highest standard through the Melbourne JD and committed to remaining at the forefront of legal education.
