About Melbourne

There is much to love about Melbourne – just ask the locals. This sophisticated world city in the south-east corner of mainland Australia inspires a deep passion in those lucky enough to live here. Residents love its vibrant energy, incredible choice of restaurants, stylish boutiques, café-filled laneways, unbeatable galleries, luscious parks and village-like inner suburbs, each with its own special character.

Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia, home to 3.5 million people from 140 nationalities and the largest international student population in the country.  These multicultural roots are evident in Melbourne’s rich artistic life and vast array of cuisine, as well as the 151 different languages Melbournians speak.  Proudly pre-eminent in business, international trade, the arts, entertainment, sport and major international events, the city centre is home to around 50,000 people and welcomes over 400,000 workers, visitors and tourists every day.

Australia’s largest arts and entertainment precinct is located in Melbourne, right by the Yarra River.  It includes the National Gallery of Victoria, the acclaimed Victorian Arts Centre, the Melbourne Theatre Company, the Australian Ballet, the Australian Opera, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Federation Square.  The city-wide devotion to arts and culture is apparent even in the unlikeliest places – like Melbourne’s art-covered laneways in and around the CBD.

Melbourne is also Australia’s sporting capital, and plays host to events such as the Formula One Grand Prix, the Australian Open, and the race that brings Australia to a standstill: the Melbourne Cup.  There are also festivals galore to be enjoyed, like the Melbourne International Arts Festival, the Melbourne Fringe, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Melbourne International Film Festival, the Melbourne Fashion Festival, the Melbourne Jazz Festival, the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and the Melbourne Writers’ Festival. Community festivals such as the Greek, Italian, Spanish and Thai festivals are always popular, and street festivals on Brunswick, Lygon and Chapel Streets as well as the St. Kilda Festival are regular fixtures of the community social calendar.
