Welcome to the 2009 Melbourne JD!

On behalf of Melbourne Law School, it is my pleasure to congratulate you on your place in this pioneering programme in 2009.  We are delighted that you are joining us this year.

Over the last two months you would have received a variety of information relating to enrolment, orientation, teaching staff, syndicates, extra-curricular activities, and the professional services available to you.  Should you have questions about any of this, please feel free to contact the Melbourne Law School Student Centre.  If you wish to speak with an academic member of staff, you are most welcome to get in touch with me (p.nicholson@unimelb.edu.au) or my colleagues Professor Belinda Fehlberg, Professor Richard Garnett and Associate Professor Christian Witting, as the 2009 Course Directors.

Orientation is a wonderful opportunity to begin to know the Law School and to start the process of immersion in the Melbourne JD.  The orientation program is designed to get you thinking about the study and practice of law as early as possible, in a context that lays out a wide range of the options that will be open to you, during your time as a JD student and afterwards.  The highlight of the orientation program is an address by the Chief Justice of Victoria, the Honourable Justice Marilyn Warren AC, in the historic Banco Court in the Supreme Court of Victoria.  During orientation, you will also have the chance to meet members of your cohort, current JD students, JD alumni, and the academic and professional staff of the Law School with whom you will work in first year.

I look forward to working with you this year.

Melbourne JD 2009 Orientation Program

At the core of the Melbourne JD experience is the course itself and the subjects through which it is delivered.  The Melbourne JD is a three-year program taught over six semesters, although you have the option (subject to approval) of accelerating your degree in order to finish the JD in just over two years.
