Scholarships and Financial Assistance for Local Students

Australian Federation of University Women (AFUW)

The scholarships listed below are offered only to female students who are enrolled at Victorian universities.  Applicants are asked to demonstrate that they are or have been experiencing disadvantage in the pursuit of their studies.  Students must be enrolled in the Melbourne JD at the time of application.

Victorian Branch - Philippa McCall Scholarship and Bursaries
Scholarship of $2,000 and two Bursaries of $1,000 each. Mature age will be a preferential factor. More details

South Australian Branch - Heather Latz Bursary
Up to $4,000 each for women of any nationality. More details.

Arno Herpe Bequest

For indigenous people from the South Pacific area (including Australia and New Zealand) who can demonstrate financial need and academic success. Students must be enrolled in the JD at the time of application. More details.

Centre for Indigenous Education 

The Centre for Indigenous Education administers a variety of scholarships for students of Indigenous Australian descent. More details.

Charlie Bell Scholarship for Future Leaders

$20,000 for well-rounded Australian achievers who can demonstrate academic excellence, career/personal achievements and leadership/community service. Students must have been accepted into the Melbourne JD program or be enrolled in the JD at the time of application. More details.

The Eleanor and Joseph Wertheim Scholarship

Approximately $20,000 annually over the duration of the degree for unmarried female students at least 25 years old. The student must be able to provide documentary evidence of receipt of means-tested income support payment from Centrelink and demonstrate difficult circumstances.  Students must be enrolled in the JD at the time of application. Fay Marles Scholarship

Living allowance and relocation grant for indigenous Australians and/or people whose tertiary studies have been adversely affected by illness, disability, family responsibility or traumatic events. Applicants must demonstrate academic merit. Commencing and continuing students are welcome to apply. More details.

Frederick Richard O’Connell Scholarship

Up to $10,000 per annum; awarded on the basis of good character, personality, academic achievement and proficiency at sport.  Only children of employees, directors or proprietors of companies that are members of the Timber Merchants Association (Victoria) are eligible for this scholarship.  Commencing and continuing students are welcome to apply. More details.

Graduate Access Melbourne Bursaries

$5,000 for students who are either Indigenous Australians, previous/current holders of a Humanitarian Visa, from a rural or isolated background, suffer from disadvantaged socio-economic circumstances or have a disability/chronic medical condition. The bursary is for commencing students only. More details.

Human Rights Scholarship

Living allowance and relocation grant for students who are able to demonstrate a commitment to the peaceful advancement of respect for human rights that extends beyond their academic studies (such as voluntary work and/or work experience). Commencing and continuing students are welcome to apply.  Applicants should also show academic merit. More details.

John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship

Up to two scholarships of $5,500 each for applicants of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.  Applicants are asked to provide a personal statement, a brief CV and other relevant information with their application.  Students must be enrolled in the Melbourne JD at the time of application. Leith Indigenous Scholars Program

The Leith Trust Indigenous Scholars Program provides a selected indigenous student with a Commonwealth Supported Place and financial support of up to $25,000 per annum, for each of the three years of the Melbourne JD. More details.

Melbourne Law School Scholarships and Prizes

Melbourne Law School offers a number of prestigious scholarships each year to suitably qualified candidates. Several prizes and awards that recognise outstanding academic achievement in the Melbourne JD program are also available. More details.

Polish Student Awards

$300 to $1000 for students who are of Polish origin (parents or grandparents), of high academic merit, are currently enrolled in the JD and are Victorian residents. More details.

Robert Riley Scholarship

Up to $5,000 for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people 25 years or under. More details.

Student Published Research Prize

The Student Published Research Prize is awarded annually for outstanding pieces of writing published by students of Melbourne Law School.

There are two prizes of $1,000 each - one to be awarded to an undergraduate law student and the other to be awarded to a postgraduate law student. More details.

Victoria University/University of Melbourne Scholarships

$5,000 for students who are either Indigenous Australians, previous/current holders of a Humanitarian Visa, from a rural or isolated background, suffer from disadvantaged socio-economic circumstances or have a disability/chronic medical condition. Students must have completed their undergraduate degree at Victoria University. More details.
