Student Exchange
Student exchange is an exhilarating opportunity allowing students to undertake study for credit at other well-recognised law schools and universities overseas.
The Law School is currently expanding its international exchange opportunities to enable greater diversity of options for graduate law students to go abroad. Check this website regularly for news of these exciting developments.
About the exchange process
Melbourne JD students will normally be required to complete at least four semesters of study prior to going abroad on exchange.
Study plans must be approved in advance by the Law School with subjects to be undertaken at the graduate level (JD or equivalent*) at a recognised tertiary institution in order for credit to be granted towards the elective program.
For further information on student exchange at the University of Melbourne, please visit Study Abroad and Exchange.
* In countries offering a four to five year undergraduate law program, JD students will be restricted to undertaking fourth and fifth year level law subjects at the host institution. Enrolment in law subjects offered at the masters level in LLM equivalent programs is also possible.
Contributions toward the cost of student exchange
The Law School, together with the Melbourne Global Mobility office, offers some financial support to students through scholarships and study grants to assist with the costs involved in approved student exchanges.
More international opportunities
Melbourne Law School is the only Australian member of the London-based Centre for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS) where our students have the opportunity to spend a semester studying transnational law with students from around the world. The CTLS program is a joint venture of leading global law schools, co-ordinated by Georgetown University’s Law Centre.
