Email to all Legal Theory students from Pip Nicholson and Peter Rush (sent on 29 October 2009): All students will have received an email the Jd Program director and the Legal Theory coordinator today concerning the exam arrangments in Legal Theory. A copy of this email is posted on this subject page under "Current Assessment Materials".
Here, you will find any matters which may arise from time to time and which we wish to draw to your attention of a general nature about the running and teaching of the subject. It will also include copies of general emails sent to all students in Legal Theory.
Preparation for the first class (email sent 23 July): As you are aware, there is essential reading (listed in the Reading Guide) for the first class taking place next week. Wendy, Shaun and I wanted to make a number of comments on this reading which will assist in your preparation for the class. Please read the Subject Information and Reading Guide before coming to the class. Second, the course materials you should read for the first class are Goodrich and the Mabo extract (Brennan J). The Shklar does not have to be read for the first class - as you will note, it returns as essential reading in a later seminar (on justice and injustice), and in the first class we will make some brief remarks about the relevance of the Shklar reading for the start of the course. Could I also draw your attention to the Guest Lecture Series during the semester … In particular, the first Guest Lecture (by Dr Mike Kelly) is on the rule of law - a topic which you will encounter directly in the first module of Legal theory and specifically in the readings for seminar 1.1. Once again, welcome to legal theory and we all look forward to meeting you next week. Cheers, Peter.
Due date for Legal Theory Essay revised: You have been sent an email today (30 July 09) from Vanessa Shaw (Manager, Student Law Centre) advising you of a slight change to the due date of the essay (not the exam) for this subject. The due date is now Wednesday 18 November at 4pm, but please check the revised assessment schedule now posted on the JD website and of course your email for the full details of the change. This change has made to free up your time after your last exam to put the finishing touches to your essay.
Assessment Item: Essay Topics and Instructions. This is now available. It has been posted under the materials tab (current assessment materials). Copies will be distributed in class in the week beginning 24 August 2009.
Assessment Item: Exam Instructions and Guidance. A handout with guidance on the form and requirements of the end of semester exam is now available. It is posted here under the materials tab (current assessment materials).
