What motivated you to pursue studying law?
I have always been intrigued by the ever-changing legal and regulatory environments which govern multi-national business enterprises. With my Bachelor of Commerce degree I embarked upon a career in Risk Management Consulting, however, after only a few years I realised that without a legal education the value I could bring to my clients and the heights I could achieve in my career were limited. Hence, I made the decision to temporarily take a step back from my professional career and pursue an education in law.
Why did you choose to pursue the Melbourne JD at the Melbourne Law School?
In seeking to secure an education which would enable me to work effectively for clients with global operations, I was keenly interested in obtaining an education which would provide me with a foundation in the law governing local and international business dealings. I chose the Melbourne JD because it suited my needs perfectly. I was excited to find a program where I would be surrounded by other postgraduates from a myriad of backgrounds to enrich the experience of learning. Also, the Melbourne Law School has an international reputation for excellence, and this was a key differentiating factor in my decision making process.
Describe your experience of the Melbourne JD to date. What have been the highlights so far?
The Melbourne JD is intense! While the program is very challenging and requires disciplined commitment, it has been an exciting and wonderful experience to be a part of a group of students and staff truly committed to success. The faculty members are approachable, readily available and keen to work with students to bring all the University's resources to the fore according to individual needs. The expectations are high and the assessment is tough. However, and most importantly, it is fair.
What do you plan to do when you've completed the Melbourne JD?
Once I've completed the JD, I am looking forward to practicing as a solicitor for a period of time before returning to and furthering my career in Risk Management Consultancy. With a Melbourne JD, I have no doubt that my career growth opportunities will be limitless and I am wholeheartedly looking forward to whatever the future may bring, wherever that may be.
What advice do you have for others considering taking the Melbourne JD at the University of Melbourne?
Those who are interested in the JD must be prepared to commit to a disciplined routine of study for the entirety of each term. If they are serious about obtaining an education that will enable them to build a career founded upon a strong legal education, this is the place to start. Good luck!
