Dean Merriman (Australia)

Bachelor of Arts (Political Science and Criminology, Honours) – The University of Melbourne

What motivated you to pursue studying law?

My area of interest is in international trade, development and globalisation, three topics which I pursued in my BA (Hons).  Upon completing my Honours year I was convinced that if I was ever going to make a contribution in this area it would require a law degree.  I also wanted a set of skills that were versatile enough to give me the option of working in a range of different jobs.

Why did you choose to take the Melbourne JD?

The idea of the Melbourne JD being a postgraduate qualification really persuaded me.  I didn’t want to go back to being in first year; I wanted to study with people who were making a more educated decision about their academic pursuits and brought very different life experiences to the table.  For me, that is essentially what the JD means.  It is a recognition that I’ve experienced other things and have returned to university because of an awareness of the importance of the course – not just because I got a high ENTER score.

Why did you choose Melbourne Law School?

I’ve always been a Melbourne University student, and I think it’s a great university, so from that perspective it was a simple decision.  Beyond that, I’m aware of the reputation the university enjoys locally, but I also think the Melbourne Model will serve to elevate the university’s reputation internationally.  This gives me confidence that a Melbourne JD will give me the opportunity to achieve my own goals.

I suppose if there was a feature of the Law School that really stands out, it is the ability the School provides for students to pursue specific areas of interest.  I like the different areas of specialisation, and the opportunity that creates to immerse yourself in what you’re really passionate about while you’re studying.  You also get the chance to meet some of the leading academics in your field.

Describe your experience of the Melbourne JD to date.  What have been the highlights so far?

My experience in the Melbourne JD is one of perseverance and commitment, two things of which you need plenty to get the most out of the course.  It is very demanding.  At the same time, I reflect upon the manner in which the course is taught, and can see how its intensity forces a rapid development in legal reasoning and skill.  In this regard it is very satisfying to see my skills evolve.  For me though, the true enjoyment of the course has come from my experiences outside the classroom.  I’ve been exposed to some important, cutting edge ideas and individuals.  Moreover, I’ve developed great friendships, developed partly through the intensity of the course, which inevitably brings us together, and partly out of the realisation of shared passions and interests.  These relationships are highly rewarding – we share excitement about what is possible with a JD, but at the same time we challenge one another’s ideas, and are constantly pushing each other.  It’s an excellent environment in which to study.

What do you plan to do when you’ve completed the Melbourne JD?

I haven’t made any concrete decisions as yet on what I would like to do after the JD.  I do intend to travel when I finish, and perhaps put my skills to work in a volunteer capacity overseas.  It’s difficult to know given that I’m still discovering how different areas of law feed into respective areas of interest.

What advice do you have for others considering taking the Melbourne JD at the University of Melbourne?

If you are considering the JD think very carefully about your decision.  The JD is not for everyone, and the course places huge demands on your life.  Given the commitment that is required, prospective students face an inescapable evaluation of their motivation.  This is not to detract from the quality of the course, but it is quickly evident that a lot is asked of you if you are accepted.  It is not a decision to be made lightly.
