I have always had a broad range of interests and initially found it very difficult to narrow down subject choices at tertiary level. A fascination with medical sciences led me to a degree in pharmacology; however a law degree opens up so many more doors and will enable me to get involved in the commercial and regulatory aspects of the industry, and of course, allow me to practice law.
I was particularly attracted to the Melbourne JD because I wanted to study at the graduate level, rather than beginning another undergraduate course. Members of our student cohort are qualified in a wide variety of academic disciplines and bring diverse work/life experience to the classroom, facilitating some very interesting discussion. I chose the Melbourne Law School because of its location in such a vibrant city, and because of its extensive resources and excellent reputation.
A particular highlight of the JD is the strength of the student cohort and the support which this provides. No doubt, friendships will continue for many years to come. I also particularly enjoyed the Constitutional Law assessment for which we drafted hypothetical submissions to the High Court and presented them in the form of a moot.
My advice to prospective students would be to come prepared for a lot of reading. The JD is definitely a demanding course of study, but it is rewarding and time really does fly.
