Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce - The University of Melbourne

What motivated you to pursue studying law?

I first became interested in law while undertaking undergraduate studies in Business Law for my Bachelor of Commerce.  After I completed my Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Engineering in 2005, I entered the work force as a consulting engineer however my interest in law continued to grow during this time.  Ultimately, I decided that I wanted to return to study to fulfill this interest in law. I hope to combine the knowledge and skills that I learnt in my undergraduate studies and experience in the work force with the knowledge and skills I learn in the Juris Doctor to embark on a new career in legal practice.

Why did you choose the Melbourne Law School?

I was aware of Melbourne Law School’s excellent domestic and international reputation for high-quality teaching and producing first-rate graduates.  By speaking with past graduates, I gained an insight into both the enriching experience to expect from studying at the Melbourne Law School and the excellent career prospects of those who graduate from the school.

Describe your experience of the Melbourne JD to date.   What have been the highlights so far?

Given the diverse backgrounds of the students in my course, I find class discussions stimulating as colleagues draw on their various backgrounds to provide a number of different perspectives on any given issue.  The course work is both interesting and challenging and I have found the lecturers very approachable.

The weekly seminar series where guest speakers are invited to address JD students has been an informative and interesting element of the course.  The seminars are on topical issues from the media or further insights into themes that we are studying in class.  These seminars not only enhance our studies but also give an insight into the professional lives of inspirational people in the legal profession.

What are you planning to do when you have completed your degree?

When I started the course I intended to practice commercial law incorporating skills learnt through my undergraduate studies in Engineering and Commerce and experience as an engineer.   However, I am keeping an open mind regarding my career options.  Since commencing the Melbourne JD, I have learnt about the variety of career paths that are available after the completion of my studies and I look forward to exploring these options as the course progresses.
